CCSM/ESMF Evaluation & Test Plans

Active Test Plan

The Community Climate System 4 (CCSM4) was the first release of the model to be delivered with ESMF interfaces, in April 2010. A test plan was created to support ongoing development. The intent is for the ESMF team to complete the subset of tests outlined before submitting changes to the CESM group. The plan is a work in progress and may need to be customized for specific capabilities.

The following test reports were submitted to CESM prior to integration:

Archived Plans

The following are evaluation plans that led up to the integration of ESMF into CCSM public releases.

The first plan was approved by the CCSM Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) in January, 2005. This plan focused on the component and redistribution functions of ESMF, and required that ESMF demonstrate less than 5% overhead relative to CCSM's existing infrastructure. ESMF successfully passed the evaluation in May, 2007 and the ESMF version was incorporated into the CCSM development repository.

CCSM-ESMF Evaluation Plan: Stage 1

The second plan was approved by the CCSM SSC in September, 2007. It focuses on evaluation of the regridding capabilities of ESMF, including petascale processor counts. A successful outcome will result in the ESMF version of ESMF being part of the next major release of CCSM, CCSM4. Work on this evaluation is ongoing.
